WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cooper Allen struck out five over five shutout innings, and Kevin Jones collected three hits as UNCW upended Maryland, 8-4, in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday at Brooks Field. Maryland earned the series win, though, with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
The Terrapins closed out the weekend with a 2-1 record while the Seahawks finished 1-2. Allen (1-0), who was making his fourth career start, scattered two singles over his career-long five innings, and tied his career high with those five strikeouts.
The Seahawks built a 6-0 lead through six innings with a run in the third, two more in the fourth, and exploded for three in the fifth.
