Bill allowing for opt out of no-fault divorce moves through Iowa Senate

DES MOINES, Iowa — Since 1970, Iowa has had no-fault divorce, allowing Iowans to divorce without needing a cause. Now, a bill is moving through the Iowa Senate that could change divorce laws.

Senate File 2172 is under consideration to allow couples to opt out of no-fault divorce. If in the future a married couple wanted to divorce, they would have to prove fault in court for at least one of the spouses.

The bill is currently sponsored by Republican Sen. Jesse Green of Boone. He feels the bill is needed to accommodate people with differing religious views on marriage in the state…
