Avalanche Watch for Greater Lake Tahoe Area Feb 15

The National Weather Service has issued an Avalanche Watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area starting Sunday, Feb 15. The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee reports that high avalanche danger is expected in the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4). This warning applies to backcountry areas only, not to ski resorts or highways with avalanche control.

The watch is in effect from Sunday 7:45 AM PST through Tuesday 5:00 AM PST. A strong storm bringing heavy snow and high winds could trigger large avalanches capable of burying or injuring people. Backcountry travel in or near avalanche terrain is not recommended during this period. More details are available at sierraavalanchecenter.org and avalanche.org
