EPA to update Southside lead cleanup plan at public meeting in Chattanooga Tuesday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn — After eight years of testing, cleanup, public meetings, and community concern, the Environmental Protection Agency is getting ready to share the next chapter in Chattanooga’s Southside lead cleanup.

The EPA will hold a public meeting Tuesday, February 17th, to update residents on changes to the cleanup plan for the Southside Chattanooga Lead Superfund Site.

The meeting comes after the agency issued a new national Lead Directive in October 2025 that changes how lead in soil is evaluated and cleaned up in residential areas.

EPA officials say the directive will require adjustments to Chattanooga’s existing cleanup plan. This summer, the agency plans to release what is called an Explanation of Significant Differences. That document will outline updates to cleanup levels and changes to how soil remediation is handled moving forward…
