Alabama schools tackling statewide nursing shortage with new training programs

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Alabama is grappling with a nursing shortage crisis as healthcare facilities struggle to fill positions amid an exodus of experienced professionals.

An annual report from the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) in 2023 found that nearly 40,000 nurses are leaving the workforce faster than new graduates can replace them, creating a projected shortage of up to 14,000 nurses as approximately one-third of the state’s nursing professionals approach retirement.
