From gas stations to his own kids, new Kalamazoo city manager is fielding ideas everywhere

KALAMAZOO, MI — Before he was even chosen to be Kalamazoo’s top official, City Manager Malcolm Hankins was out chatting with residents — including some who were unhoused — in Bronson Park.

In his first month in Kalamazoo, Hankins has been on a mission to meet residents from across the city, regardless of their living situation or tax bracket.

“It doesn’t surprise me that the folks I’ve talked to who happen to be unhoused are no different than me,” Hankins said. “They want to feel safe. They want to know that they can be with their loved ones.”…
