Alabama Senate bill would require hospital ER staffing transparency

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) – A proposed Alabama Senate bill would require hospitals to publicly report how many hours per week their emergency rooms are staffed by physicians.

Senate Bill 297, introduced by Sen. Larry Stutts, would mandate hospitals file quarterly reports detailing physician staffing levels and display the data online and in emergency rooms.

“That bill is simply about transparency,” Stutts said. “The public has a right to know whether if I show up in the ER there’s going to be a doctor there to take care of me, or whether there’s going to be a mid level practitioner there to take care of me.”…
