What looked like a neighborly favor on a quiet Columbia Heights street ended with a dad in handcuffs and on a plane to Texas. Neighbors say Jesus Flores stepped outside to help people with apparent car trouble and was almost immediately surrounded and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, according to his family and a security camera clip. Within 48 hours, Flores’ wife and son say, he was taken to El Paso, Texas, leaving six children at home, including two with autism who need daily care. The family calls the episode a deliberate setup, pointing to footage that shows people peering under a hood while other vehicles block the street before agents close in.
