Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews were on high alert after responding to a detached garage fire Saturday afternoon near 13th and Peach Street. Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says firefighters arrived and learned lithium batteries were inside the burning garage.
“We take extra caution with that because the toxic gases from those lithium batteries are really bad,” Lierman says. “We made sure everyone was in their proper PPE, but we were also doing our best to keep bystanders away.”
She says fortunately this fire was in a detached garage and not someone’s home. “If you happen to have a fire in your home from what you think might be a lithium battery, just get out, don’t try to fight that fire. We don’t want anyone inhaling those toxic chemicals.”…
