McKinney FD announces ‘life-saving’ ambulance blood program

MCKINNEY, Texas — The McKinney Fire Department will soon have a new tool to help in the most serious medical emergencies.

Starting Feb. 16, the department will launch a pre-hospital blood program, which will equip medical units to carry and administer blood to patients in the field and on the way to the hospital, the department said in a press release.

“Blood carries oxygen, which the body desperately needs during life-threatening emergencies,” Ben Jones, battalion fire chief with the McKinney Police Department, said. “By administering blood sooner, our paramedics can begin life-saving treatment as early as possible. This allows patients to arrive at the hospital in better condition and ready for the next level of care.”…
