St. Louis’ Griot Museum highlights Black history with wax figures

ST. LOUIS – The Griot Museum houses Black history through life-size wax figures, artifacts and memorabilia that convey the stories of resilient African Americans. It is only the second museum of its kind in the United States.

Opened in 1997, the institution was originally named The Black World History Wax Museum. The museum focuses on preserving stories of individuals who contributed to the history and growth of their communities.

The museum’s current name, Griot, is derived from West African culture. In that tradition, a griot is a highly respected community member responsible for collecting and preserving history that is relevant and valuable to the community.
