Ernie the horse safely rescued after falling through Edinboro Lake ice

During this time of year, it’s not uncommon for emergency crews to get calls for rescues on frozen water, but Monday night on Edinboro Lake, crews were called to save an unusual victim.

Ernie, a 22-year-old horse, escaped his home and made his way out onto the frozen lake by Peninsula Park, where his legs fell through the ice.

“We had to dig the mud out from underneath him, slide a harness around him. Then we had to rig rope to pull him out of the ice,” said Captain Jim Dahle, with the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department. “He stood up and fell back into the ice, so we had to do a secondary rescue.”

The process was not an easy one — Once on shore, Ernie took some time to be able to stand back up on his own feet and then received care from ANNA Shelter volunteers who were on scene…
