HOUSTON — NRG Stadium is racing to finish a major roof replacement after sheets of rain poured into the venue during Saturday’s Monster Jam, but officials say the show — and the next big ones — will go on. The stadium is in the middle of what NRG Park calls an “active roof replacement,” and last week’s severe weather hit right in the middle of that construction process.
Fans at Monster Jam described the scene as far more than a drip. “It was more than a leak. It was just raining down in there. I mean, sheets,” said attendee Aaron Frederick, who lives in Groves. He said it started with a few flashes of lightning and then suddenly, “it just started pouring in, and I mean pouring in.” The downpour lasted about 10 minutes, showering in at multiple points, but not long enough to shut the show down.
In a statement shared with KHOU 11, NRG said an assessment of the affected areas is ongoing in coordination with construction partners. The stadium stressed that the roof project is being “strategically managed” with “full awareness” of its tenants and event partners.
