PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – A routine repair operation turned into a crisis Tuesday afternoon when a dump truck was partially swallowed by a sudden sinkhole at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street, an area already under closure due to prior subsurface instability.
The collapse occurred around 12:58 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response and leading officials to declare a local state of emergency.

Authorities said the truck was part of an authorized repair crew working inside the closed-off area when the ground beneath it gave way.
