The City of Trussville is announcing the retirement of Police K9 Leo, effective April 15, according to Mayor Ben Short.
K9 Leo, whose full name is Leonidas, is 10 years old. Born on January 20, 2016, he began serving with the Trussville Police Department in August 2017. As the department’s first dual-purpose K9, trained in both tracking and narcotics detection, Leo helped establish the standard for Trussville’s current K9 program.
During his career, Leo played a critical role in numerous narcotics and currency seizures, major investigations, and high-risk suspect apprehensions. His tracking work led to the successful capture of fleeing and violent offenders, while his narcotics detection supported local, regional, and federal law enforcement partners.
