LEESBURG, Va. (DC News Now) — A Virginia faith leader known for her work in civil rights and community empowerment is celebrating a historic milestone. Bishop Michelle Thomas has become the first African American female Episcopalian bishop consecrated in Loudoun County, Va.
“Everybody laughs about Jamaicans, how we have fifteen jobs,” she said while walking through the African American history exhibits displayed inside Holy & Whole Life Changing Ministries, her Leesburg church. “It’s absolutely true.”
Thomas was officially consecrated this year, marking a major moment for the Episcopal faith community.

“I am the first, but I certainly won’t be the last,” she said. “The glass ceiling is broken, and so many more women that are equally as anointed and called and chosen and set aside — they’re going to be able to reach that highest rung.”…
