Powell man loses $93,000 in online car sale gone wrong

POWELL, Tenn. (WATE) – A Knox County man is out $93,000 after selling his 2025 Chevy Silverado online.

Michael Phillips of Powell was contacted by a buyer on Facebook. He completed the sale on a three-way call with a GM Financial agent. Phillips had sold boats, cars, and trucks on Facebook Marketplace before. He conducted those deals in a similar manner to this one.

“So now I’m in the process of suing GM. And clearly, this is on GM,” said Phillips. “I would have never released my vehicle to somebody had it not shown a zero balance, and I was released from the contract.”

The third person on that call? Robert James Durden, who claimed to be the owner of Three Brothers Trucking in Atlanta, Georgia. Durden sent a driver to pick up the vehicle. After it was picked up, the payment reversed…
