KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Dr. John McElligott, co-founder of St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund, died on Sunday, the charity said.
The nationwide nonprofit exists to help over-the-road semi-truck drivers and their families who are out of work after illnesses or injuries. McElligott founded it alongside Dave Nemo and Michael Burns.

“For more than 30 years, [McElligott] fought for the health and dignity of America’s truck drivers, helping thousands and delivering relief when they needed it most,” said St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund. “His impact will continue to live on through our organization, in the lives of our Highway Heroes, and the many communities he impacted.”
McElligott was also a Navy veteran and physician, according to the charity. In a statement to Peppercomm, the group praised McElligott as a passionate advocate and tireless champion who helped thousands of truck drivers.

Courtney Niemann, the charity’s executive director, added, “Because of his vision, more than 4,000 drivers have received assistance and over $5 million has gone directly toward helping families stay afloat during medical hardship. His commitment to prevention through health and wellness programs will continue guiding our mission for years to come.”…
