Police arrest Charleston man accused of setting brush fire

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The Charleston Police Department arrested a man following an investigation into a wildfire on Laurel Island nearly a month ago.

Malcom Jamal Brown, 27, is charged with willfully burning the lands of another without consent.

Officers and firefighters responded to a massive brush fire on Jan. 28 just before 11 p.m. after receiving reports of an outside fire near Romney Street by the Ravenel Bridge and I-26. Upon arrival, crews found grass, brush and debris burning.

The Charleston Fire Department, along with the Saint Johns and Mount Pleasant fire departments, worked to contain and extinguish the fire for several hours. The fire burned approximately 20 acres of undeveloped land. No structures were damaged.

Police and investigators with the Charleston Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office later determined that Brown intentionally set a small fire that quickly spread beyond his control…
