Alabama bill proposes changing school report card ratings

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Public schools around Alabama receive report cards every year just like students. One lawmaker said it is time for a change when it comes to rating how schools are performing.

One bill raises the state’s grading scale for schools by 10 points. This means a grade of 90 could be considered a “B.” That scale would be based on student academic achievement and student academic growth. High schools and schools that teach 12th graders would also be assessed based on college and career readiness.

State Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, the bill’s sponsor, said this ensures schools continue improving.

“I want to make sure that we’re not setting students up to fail,” Collins said. “That we’re hopefully putting all our students in a place where they can be successful in whatever direction they want to go next.”…
