HOUSTON — The 89-year-old Army veteran said he was awakened by his son, who told him their home was on fire. The two managed to escape the smoke and flames safely as Houston firefighters arrived at the scene.
Despite having hundreds of gallons of water on their trucks, firefighters attempted to do what crews often do during active fires — connect to a nearby fire hydrant. Woodson said the first hydrant firefighters tried was not producing water.
