As city and Madison school district leaders work to address safety concerns on South Park Street after a car struck and killed a student, a School Board member says the tragedy spotlights a gap in the ability of local elected officials to effectively collaborate.
Sasha Rosen, 17, died Feb. 5 after being hit in a crosswalk on his way to West High School, according to Madison police. On Monday, police said the crosswalk lights were flashing, the car’s speed was a “significant factor” in the crash and an arrest had been made.
In the two weeks since, the city’s traffic engineering department launched reviews to identify factors in the crash and longer-term safety measures, while the school district designated Park Street an “unusually hazardous” zone and began using school buses to transport all students living on the east side of Park Street attending James C.
