Madison, McFarland seek public feedback on potential border changes

The city of Madison and the village of McFarland are seeking public feedback on a proposal that aims to clean up municipal boundaries and plan for future growth in the area. The two municipalities border each other just east of Lake Waubesa, along Madison’s far southeast corner.

Andrew Bremer, McFarland’s community and economic development director, explained at a joint public information meeting on Monday the potential benefits of an intergovernmental agreement (IGA).

“It can improve how we provide public service delivery, more certainty in terms of how we’re investing taxpayer resources regarding long term planning for services and infrastructure. It can avoid having property owners or developers trying to play one community off of another,” Bremer said. “Oftentimes, this process is good for developing relationships between communities and that can in itself be fruitful for future intergovernmental cooperation beyond just what we’re talking about here today. And then it allows us to both proactively guide our future with the understanding of what our long term boundaries might look like.”…
