Lakewood, Colo., takes action on pedestrian safety

The city of Lakewood, Colo., recognized it had a serious problem with fatal pedestrian accidents, so it looked for a solution, including testing pedestrian detection warning systems, one of which won an award after their pilot project.

Mike Whiteaker, city transportation engineer for the city of Lakewood, said, “What started all this, unfortunately, was pedestrian crashes, most of which were fatal.”

Most of those accidents were occurring on a mile-and-a-half-long section of West Colfax between Sheridan Boulevard and Teller Street, and most were on the east end of the road…
