Former Disney Star Christy Carlson Romano Reveals Concerning Cancer Screening Results

Actress and “Vulnerable” podcast host Christy Carlson Romano, 41, is navigating a challenging period after a recent cancer screening yielded abnormal results. Romano shared the emotional news in a tearful Instagram video on Tuesday, discussing her family’s history with the disease and the anxieties she now faces as a mother of two young daughters.

Romano disclosed that both of her parents battled cancer, with her mother successfully recovering and her father ultimately succumbing to the illness. Her maternal grandmother also passed away from lung cancer, a familial history that strongly influenced her decision to undergo screening.

She revealed that she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, were screened together. While Rooney’s results came back clear, Romano’s did not. Her next medical step involves a PET scan, an advanced imaging test that utilizes a radioactive tracer to detect metabolic activity in tissues and organs.

The journey to secure this crucial appointment has presented its own set of hurdles, with Romano describing a struggle to get the PET scan covered by insurance companies, adding to her emotional burden during this uncertain time.

Romano also reflected on the recent passing of actor James Van Der Beek, who died at 48 from colorectal cancer. As an Austin resident, Romano had known Van Der Beek personally, describing him as a “pillar of our community in Texas.” She emphasized the pervasive nature of cancer, stating, “Cancer is everywhere… which is why I got this test.”

During this period of uncertainty, Romano shared that she is relying heavily on her faith. “It’s time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it’s in God’s hands, most of it,” she said, acknowledging the seriousness of cancer, especially as a mother to Sophia, 7, and Isabella, 9.

The “Even Stevens” alum expressed feelings of “disbelief” and is attempting to manage her anxiety by focusing on work, including a recently filmed movie and the upcoming release of her memoir, while she awaits further medical information.

This potential health crisis follows another significant event for Romano; in February 2023, she revealed she had been accidentally shot in the face during a clay pigeon shooting event for her husband’s birthday. “Very vulnerable time for me,” Romano stated in her latest video, noting it’s “About 367 days since I got shot in the face.”

In her Instagram caption, Romano admitted to initial hesitation about sharing her news, fearing she might “come off ‘cringe.’” However, she ultimately felt it was her “duty to share, so that people get out there and get screenings.” She concluded by asking for “good vibes” and promised to keep her followers updated.
