100-year-old Bay Area Italian deli company down to one last store

A century-old Bay Area Italian deli brand known for stacked mortadella and salami cold-cut sandwiches, as well as house-made ravioli, closed its last Walnut Creek shop on Wednesday. Only one outpost from the company remains.

Genova Delicatessan announced that Feb. 18 would be the last day of business for its Walnut Creek location at 1105 S. California Blvd. The closure comes just three months after its other Walnut Creek outpost closed, which was at 2064 Treat Blvd. While the company was founded in 1926 in Oakland, it had been in Walnut Creek for 58 years, according to Bay Area News Group.

“This was a heartfelt decision made after years of navigating increasing economic challenges,” the business wrote in a statement first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. “We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve generations of Genova customers and to be part of this community for so long.” (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)…
