‘You chose to be more’: FDNY promotes 107 officers at Staten Island ceremony

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY promoted 107 new officers to its ranks on Tuesday.

Hundreds of friends, family and firefighters from all over the city packed into the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex to cheer and watch as fire department leadership swore in 21 new battalion chiefs, 30 new captains and 56 new lieutenants to the ranks of New York’s Bravest.

On hand was new FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who addressed the promotees, congratulating them on what she described as the culmination of years of effort.

“Being promoted in the FDNY is not just a title change, it is a transfer of responsibility. You didn’t just pass a test, you chose to sacrifice your free time, your sleep, to prove you are ready to lead,” the commissioner said.

“You chose to be more so you can do more for the people of New York,” Bonsignore continued.

The commissioner also made a point to thank the families of those in attendance, noting that the new fire officers only succeeded because of their encouragement…
