Kent County Program Helps Residents with Water Bills in Arrears

Water bills have been a hot topic in Lowell with significant rate increases approved in 2024, and signs pointing to additional increases being considered for the future. Residents who are struggling to keep up with their payments may find help through a water assistance program offered by the Kent County Community Action Department.

The department has long offered a program to Grand Rapids water customers, but new funding has expanded water and sewer payment assistance to all residents of Kent County who receive service from a participating provider.

“We were able to secure money from the state,” says Gustavo Perez, director of the Kent County Community Action Department. Those funds allow the county to not only help residents bring bills current but also address any underlying plumbing problems such as leaks. “That’s something new for us,” according to Perez.
