Canton’s Freedom House receives Mississippi Freedom Trail marker

CANTON, Miss. (WLBT) – Canton’s Civil Rights history is remembered with a state designation at the site of a focal point for activists. This Madison County town overcame oppression through the diligent efforts of a couple who opened the door to house a growing movement.

A Mississippi Freedom Trail marker was unveiled Tuesday at the site of the Canton Freedom House Civil Rights Museum. In 1962, grocery store owner and businessman George Washington and his wife, Rembert, began allowing civil rights workers to use the building.

The house was a hub for strategic planning, nonviolent protest training and community meetings. It was a target of violence, with an attempted bombing and shots fired into the structure.
