Myrtle Beach sees decrease in opioid fatalities

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Myrtle Beach saw a 39% drop in opioid overdose deaths in 2024, outpacing the statewide decrease of 30%, according to new data.

The city credits the reduction to its opioid response program, which launched in 2023, intending to reduce overdose calls and fatalities.

“Those were the two main targets: figure out how to drive down overdose calls, which are very expensive for the city; they are also really taxing on first responders, and to reduce fatality in the city,” City of Myrtle Beach Fire Department Opioid Response Program Supervisor Robert Meaney said…
