ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County held a town hall on Wednesday night to answer people’s questions about a new work requirement for those receiving food assistance through SNAP.
More than 100,000 people in Monroe County rely on SNAP benefits, accounting for about one in seven residents. Starting on March 1, able-bodied adults without dependents will need to work to receive their benefits because of changes in federal policy.
Denise Read, deputy commissioner of the Monroe County Department of Human Services, explained the changes. “H.R. One, which was passed by Congress back in July, makes several changes to SNAP work rules related to able-bodied adults without dependents, what we call ABAWDs.”…
