NEWARK, NJ. (CBS12) — A JetBlue flight bound for Palm Beach County turned back shortly after takeoff from Newark-Liberty International Airport on Wednesday due to engine failure and smoke in the cabin, CBS New York reported.

The emergency prompted a temporary closure of the airport, which has since reopened and resumed normal operations.

According to the Port Authority, the Airbus A320 departed Newark around 5:45 p.m. but immediately returned after encountering mechanical issues.

The Federal Aviation Administration said: “After JetBlue Flight 543 landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport and exited the runway, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and evacuated passengers via slides.
