HOUSTON (CW39) – How far do you think a single lightning flash can travel? Five miles, 50 miles, or 500 miles? The answer is 515 miles for one continuous flash, which is now a world record recently verified by the World Meteorological Organization.
That mega lightning strike, called a megaflash, started over Texas and stretched all the way to near Kansas City during a major thunderstorm in October 2017. The World Meteorological Organization says the record-breaking flash measured about 829 kilometers, or 515 miles.
To put that in perspective, it would take a car 8 to 9 hours or a commercial jet at least 90 minutes to cover that distance. The megaflash did it in about ten seconds, announced the World Meteorological Organization…
