World Cup could sideline up to 25,600 metro construction workers for weeks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Temporary mass layoffs could soon hit contract construction workers across the metro on both sides of the state line as road projects could face lengthy pauses to make way for the World Cup.

At issue: delays on work for infrastructure projects pass June 1, with some work potentially halted for up to 40 days during the international event.

The organization representing tens of thousands of heavy construction workers said the impact could be devastating.

“Forty days is a long time to not be doing any infrastructure,” said Bridgette Williams, executive director of the Heavy Constructors Association of Greater Kansas City
