Meet the second candidate running for Minnehaha County sheriff

A recent graduate of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Academy is the latest Minnehaha County sheriff candidate, bringing his “expertise” in public safety and correctional law enforcement to this year’s elections.

Sioux Falls resident Bobby Smith announced his candidacy on Tuesday, Feb. 17. He will run against the only other candidate announced thus far, Minnehaha County Capt. Josh Phillips, who received an endorsement from Sheriff Mike Milstead after he announced his retirement last month.

Smith, who moved to South Dakota nearly five years ago after serving as a first responder in California, is earning his MBA in leadership and human resources at Augustana University while volunteering at the Juvenile Detention Center and mentoring with Lutheran Social Services…
