Changes coming for Lanikai Beach parking

KAILUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Parking could soon look way different for visitors to Lanikai Beach.

Beachgoers have historically parked on the Mokuloa, Aalapapa loop, many times near resident homes, but the city said that should not be the case.

JULY 2025 — Final plan to ban daytime Lanikai parking developed

“A lot of (parked cars) troll into grass or dirt, or some kind of landscaping that’s considered unimproved sidewalk, which is actually the space designated for pedestrians,” said Kelly Akasaki, Traffic Engineering Division chief at the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services. “So legally, you’re not allowed to park on any sidewalk, whether it’s improved or unimproved in the traffic code.”

Nearby residents said cars circle the loop nearly all day, every day, especially on the weekends. With Lanikai a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, finding a parking solution that works for everyone may be easier said than done…
