SANTIAGO, CHILE – A devastating truck explosion in Chile’s capital, Santiago, on Thursday has left at least four people dead and 17 injured, five of whom are in serious condition. The blast, caused by an overturned truck transporting liquid gas, also extensively damaged at least 50 vehicles and was felt up to 650 feet from the scene.

Images from the aftermath show firefighters battling intense flames and rows of cars charred by the inferno. Local authorities, citing Reuters, confirmed the incident and the grim toll. Prosecutors have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragic accident.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric expressed his condolences and solidarity with the victims’ families and loved ones. He stated that “Government teams are deployed and working together with the competent institutions to protect the population due to the smoke in the area.” He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Claudio Orrego, the governor of the Santiago metropolitan region, confirmed that five of the injured are in serious condition. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers of transporting volatile materials.
