For Black History Month, the story of Cleveland King, Jr., a Marine whose bravery went unrecognized for decades, is being honored. In 1968, King enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was thrust into the brutal Vietnam War.
King, a radio operator, was tasked with relaying commands and coordinating medevac choppers, making him a primary target for the enemy. He was wounded multiple times, including during the deadly campaign on Hill 484.
“We were only supposed to live ten seconds in a firefight…a radio operator,” King said…
