College of Wooster lays off 22 staff amid enrollment decline

The College of Wooster has eliminated 22 staff positions as part of a reduction in force, citing challenges from falling enrollment and rising expenses that have strained the institution’s finances.

In a statement, the college said it notified 18 full-time and four part-time employees last week that their roles were being cut. The positions primarily involved operational, administrative and external-facing functions, with some student-facing roles affected. No faculty were laid off.

“Wooster continues to attract excellent students, as we have throughout our history,” the statement read. “At the same time, we — like our higher education peers — have seen challenges in revenue and enrollment over the past few years due to a lower number of students graduating high school and fewer of them choosing college. Meanwhile, the expenses associated with running a college have grown.”…
