US Air Force takes first step towards F-16 mission at Gowen Field

BOISE, Idaho — The A-10 Thunderbolt II, known as the Warthog, has been a familiar sound in Boise skies for decades. Now, the U.S. Air Force is considering replacing it with the F-16 Fighting Falcon at Gowen Field.

Lt. Col. Chris Borders, who has worked at the base for nearly 30 years, said he’s watched generations of aircraft come and go.

“As a child, I grew up watching the F-4 Phantoms,” Borders said. “But the A-10 behind me, that’s been out here for 30 years, the longest-serving aircraft of the Idaho Air National Guard.”…
