Albuquerque social security office evacuated due to lighter resembling hand grenade

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Social Security Office in downtown Albuquerque had to be evacuated on Thursday due to a lighter that looked like a hand grenade.

An Albuquerque police spokesperson says the “grenade” was discovered while x-raying a man’s belongings as he was entering the office. The x-ray conveyor belt was stopped, the man was detained, and the building was evacuated by Federal Protective Service (FPS).

A bomb squad remotely inspected the item and confirmed it was not an explosive hazard. It was identified as a torch lighter resembling a hand grenade…
