Alaskans gather for Ash Wednesday as Lent begins across the state

Across Alaska, many marked the beginning of Lent today with Ash Wednesday services — including here in Anchorage, where parishioners gathered to observe one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar.

At Holy Cross Catholic Church, worshippers stepped forward one by one to receive the traditional cross of ashes on their foreheads — a symbol of repentance and reflection.
