Upstate hospital worker couple released after months in ICE custody

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — After months of being locked up in a Buffalo jail, two Syracuse hospital workers, a married couple, are both free from custody.

I.C.E. agents had arrested Alex González and Yan Vázquez in October because their papers certifying their legal status weren’t yet finalized. They were waiting in a courtroom for a hearing toward solving that very issue when agents cuffed them and eventually sent them to the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility.

Last month, a federal judge ordered them to be deported to Ecuador — which is 1,600 miles from Cuba, where they had separately migrated from (they have no connection to Ecuador). They filed for appeals. It was upon posting thousands of dollars in bond that the two were released…
