Study suggests brain training may reduce dementia — but experts urge caution

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR)- A decades-long federal study is drawing renewed attention after researchers reported that certain brain training exercises may reduce the risk of dementia years later.

The study followed nearly 3,000 adults age 65 and older as part of the federally funded ACTIVE trial. Participants were tracked over two decades to better understand whether cognitive training could have long-term effects on brain health.

Researchers found that speed-based computer training — particularly when participants completed follow-up “booster” sessions — was linked to about a 25 percent lower risk of developing dementia over 20 years. The findings were based on Medicare records…
