Commentary: Loss of police chief speaks to a bigger issue in Grand Rapids

Four years ago, Grand Rapids welcomed Police Chief Eric Winstrom at a time when our city faced enormous challenges. Within weeks of his arrival, the tragic death of Patrick Lyoya thrust our community into one of the most difficult moments in recent memory. That incident was complex and heartbreaking — but Chief Winstrom confronted it head-on, with transparency, professionalism, and a commitment to listening and learning at every turn.

From that moment on, Chief Winstrom embodied what it means to be truly present in a community. He didn’t lead from behind a desk — he stepped into neighborhood meetings, met with families, visited churches and festivals, and made himself accessible in ways that reminded residents that public safety is not just an institutional mandate, but a shared responsibility.
