State official says crime drop boosts Memphis; local leader skeptical

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee’s top economic development official says Memphis’ recent decline in crime is already reshaping how companies view the city, and he puts federal intervention at the center of that shift.

Right at the top of his testimony in Nashville, Commissioner Stuart McWhorter emphasized that businesses scouting Tennessee are now paying close attention to Memphis.

“Because of that, I would say Memphis industry is recognizing and watching what’s going on. They see that there is an opportunity for them, whether they are already there and want to invest additional dollars, or set up shop for the first time in our state. What’s happening in Memphis absolutely has made a big difference. There’s no question,” said McWhorter.
