Jackson County Prosecutor backs new bill targeting domestic violence offenders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Jackson County Prosecutor is working with state lawmakers on new legislation to strengthen penalties for domestic violence offenders as cases continue to rise in Kansas City.

Senate Bill 928 proposes making violations of “no contact orders” issued in criminal cases a Class A misdemeanor. Currently, victims must obtain civil orders of protection, which can be difficult to enforce if the abuser avoids being served.

Under existing law, violating a criminal court’s no-contact order only results in bail revocation if the offender is out of custody. The bill would create criminal consequences regardless of custody status.
