Uptown DoorDash Run Turns Deadly As Driver Gets Prison In Teen’s Killing

What started as a routine DoorDash run in Uptown Charlotte ended with gunfire, a 15-year-old boy dead, and a delivery driver facing prison time. Today, roughly 13 months after the killing of Matthias Crockett, the man who pulled the trigger stood in a Mecklenburg County courtroom, admitted guilt, and accepted a multi-year sentence as the teen’s family watched from the gallery.

Plea and sentence

Under a plea deal reached Thursday, 27-year-old Keshawn Tyree Boyd pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received an active prison term in the mid-range of four to six years, according to WBTV. His attorney told the court Boyd had cooperated with investigators after the shooting and that he legally owned the firearm he used, according to local court coverage.

What authorities say

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 400 block of West 8th Street and identified the victim as 15-year-old Matthias Crockett, according to a CMPD media release. After interviewing 27-year-old Boyd, detectives arrested him in connection with the shooting.

Reporting from WCCB and court documents state that Crockett was shot multiple times and, according to an affidavit, was not armed at the time. Investigators initially charged Boyd with first-degree murder following the Jan. 22, 2025 shooting, according to official records.
