‘Religious’ school assembly with rapper Project Pat sparks controversy

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A Tennessee school district says it’s making changes after complaints about a recent school assembly, which some say was both “religiously charged” and appeared to be mandatory for students.

Haywood County School District , located in Brownsville, says it received a formal complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation about the Dec. 25 school assembly, which featured Memphis rapper Project Pat.

FFRF said it was contacted by a concerned community member about the assembly that took place at Haywood High School.

The church watchdog group said attendance appeared mandatory, and Project Pat was introduced by a person who asked students to identify as Christian or Muslim, then led the audience in prayer.

They said during his remarks that Project Pat quoted the Bible, spoke about God, and led students in prayer, expressing hope that they would accept Jesus as their savior…
