ASCENSION AND ORLEANS PARISHES, La. (WAFB) – Two district court judges in different Louisiana parishes have issued competing custody orders for the same 4-year-old boy, creating what a legal expert calls an unprecedented situation that requires legislative intervention.
Kendall Hains is caught between two grandmothers who each hold court-ordered custody of the child. Nicole Smith, the maternal grandmother, has a custody order from Orleans Parish. The paternal grandmother, Leshawn Hains, has custody from Ascension Parish.
Smith’s custody order from Orleans Parish clearly states, “custody of Kendall Hains remains with the maternal grandmother, Nicole Smith.” Judge Desiree Cook Calvin signed the order after a court hearing in May 2024…
